UHIN Clincal Highway Overview
The Utah Health Information Network (UHIN) is a broad-based coalition of health care professionals that has been in business since 1993. UHIN participants have successfully come together for the common goal of reducing health care administrative costs through data standardization of administrative health data and electronic commerce (EC).
UHIN participants are now working together to expand this goal in having the capability of improving health care communication of clinical information among health care professionals through data standardization. All UHIN participation is purely voluntary.
The communities purpose is to leverage the existing UHIN infrastructure to develop a patient-centric private and secure total health care communication platform. The desired affect is to improve communication among health care professionals for patient care, improve the quality of patient care, improve patient clinical safety and to decrease unnecessary health care related costs.
UHIN currently has a self-supporting business model. A similar self-supporting business model will be used in the development of these additional health care capabilities.
Several subcommittees have been meeting to focus on the important elements that this communication infrastructure will include.
Some of these subcommittees include:
1- Record Locator Service Workgroup.
2- Consumer Advisory Workgroup.
3- HL7 Workgroup (e.g. Lab results, discharge summaries, etc).
4- NCPDP Workgroup (e.g. electronic prescriptions, Medicare Modernization Act rules, etc).
All interested parties are invited to participate.
